The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.
Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Players will gain the right to contest specific decisions from the chair umpire, following the system currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible interference end of a rally.
Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.
A Recent Example
An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.
Other Changes
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
