'Trapped in a Dreadful Dream': Relatives of Missing Teens Desperately Seek Answers After Ski Resort Fire
The loved ones of teenagers lost after a deadly inferno at a venue in a Swiss winter destination are enduring an agonising wait for answers and appealing for any details about their family members via social media.
The fire ripped through the Le Constellation bar in the alpine resort, located in the mountains of the Valais region, in the middle of the night of New Year's Day. Confirmed images depict the roof structure igniting as bottles with fireworks are held aloft.
Emergency services have stated that it could take considerable time to formally name the those who perished of the tragedy, which killed 40 people and injured another scores more. Authorities stated on the latest update that 113 of the those hurt have been identified, with work ongoing to identify the remaining few.
In the waiting period, loved ones have been taking to online platforms to plead for any news about their friends who were at the bar that evening.
Appeals for the Unaccounted For
The fate of Swiss national Arthur Brodard, 16, are currently unknown, according to an heartfelt request from his mother.
The resident of a town near Lausanne, informed a local newspaper that she had returned to Lausanne to check whether he was in the medical facility, while his other parent did the equivalent search in the capital, but was unsuccessful.
"This is a living nightmare, a horror. Either I find my son in the morgue, or I find him in intensive care. It's terrible," she said.
She explained that some of his peers had been discovered with burns covering nearly half their bodies. "It's unspeakable; they endured an absolute nightmare."
The Italy's foreign ministry has said that a number of of its citizens are still unaccounted for.
Included in that group is Emanuele Galeppini, a 16-year-old sportsman, originally from Italy but now living in Dubai.
The national sporting body has said that he is dead, without mentioning the fire, paying tribute to a "young athlete who represented passion and authentic values."
His father, reportedly stated that his son was at the bar and was last heard from around midnight. An official spokesperson has indicated that a formal confirmation of his death is not yet.
Further Missing Individuals
Giovanni Tamburi, 16, is also among the missing. His mother said that he had been on holiday but had ventured out with friends and found himself at the bar.
"Someone with him told me they fled after the fire broke out and that he had his mobile with him, but then at a certain point he they were separated," she explained, adding he had been wearing a distinctive gold chain.
One of his educators commented, "I remember his good nature and positive demeanor, coupled with great responsibility. Often ask if get me a coffee."
Alice Kallergis, who holds both Greek and Swiss nationality but lives full-time in the country, was also at the bar on New Year's Eve, according to reports.
Her brother has shared an urgent request on social media, saying the family has had "no news" regarding the teenager or the group she was with, who are also reported missing.
Officials from her other nation say they are actively engaged with the situation.
