The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting opening credits. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for characters including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening looks amazing. However, I felt that an element was lost in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition composed by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when co-founder the performer wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has stated that the animated show will have some surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
