Texas Attorney General Takes Legal Action Against Acetaminophen Makers Regarding Autism Assertions

Judicial Proceedings
Ken Paxton, who supports former President Trump who is running for US Senate, claimed pharmaceutical manufacturers of hiding safety concerns of Tylenol

Texas Attorney General Paxton is suing the manufacturers of Tylenol, asserting the firms hid potential risks that the drug posed to children's cognitive development.

The court filing arrives a month after Donald Trump publicized an unproven link between taking acetaminophen - alternatively called acetaminophen - while pregnant and autism in offspring.

The attorney general is taking legal action against Johnson & Johnson, which previously sold the drug, the sole analgesic suggested for expectant mothers, and the current manufacturer, which currently produces it.

In a statement, he stated they "deceived the public by making money from pain and promoting medication regardless of the potential hazards."

Kenvue states there is insufficient reliable data linking acetaminophen to autism spectrum disorder.

"These manufacturers deceived for years, intentionally threatening numerous people to increase profits," Paxton, a Republican, said.

The manufacturer commented that it was "very worried by the dissemination of inaccurate information on the security of acetaminophen and the possible consequences that could have on the health of American women and children."

On its website, the company also said it had "continuously evaluated the relevant science and there is lacking reliable evidence that demonstrates a established connection between using paracetamol and autism spectrum disorder."

Associations speaking for doctors and health professionals concur.

The leading OB-GYN organization has stated acetaminophen - the key substance in acetaminophen - is among limited choices for pregnant women to address pain and elevated temperature, which can pose major wellness concerns if left untreated.

"In over twenty years of studies on the utilization of acetaminophen in pregnancy, zero credible investigations has conclusively proven that the consumption of paracetamol in any period of gestation results in neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring," the organization commented.

The lawsuit references current declarations from the former administration in arguing the drug is allegedly unsafe.

Recently, Trump caused concern from medical authorities when he advised expectant mothers to "resist strongly" not to use Tylenol when ill.

The FDA then published an announcement that physicians should consider limiting the use of acetaminophen, while also declaring that "a causal relationship" between the medication and autism in minors has not been proven.

Health Secretary Kennedy, who supervises the FDA, had vowed in spring to undertake "a massive testing and research effort" that would determine the cause of autism spectrum disorder in a limited time.

But specialists warned that identifying a unique factor of autism spectrum disorder - thought by researchers to be the result of a complicated interplay of genetic and environmental factors - would not be simple.

Autism is a type of enduring cognitive variation and condition that affects how individuals experience and engage with the surroundings, and is identified using physician assessments.

In his court filing, the attorney general - aligned with the former president who is running for the Senate - claims the manufacturer and J&J "deliberately disregarded and attempted to silence the research" around acetaminophen and autism.

The lawsuit attempts to require the firms "destroy any marketing or advertising" that asserts acetaminophen is secure for pregnant women.

The Texas lawsuit echoes the concerns of a group of guardians of minors with autism spectrum disorder and ADHD who sued the producers of acetaminophen in two years ago.

Judicial authorities rejected the case, stating studies from the plaintiffs' authorities was lacking definitive proof.
