Nutrition Assistance Set to Cease for Over 40 Million Amid Prolonged Government Closure

The United States Department of Agriculture stated on Saturday that monthly food benefits through a critical national welfare initiatives are not going out in November due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.

Impasse Persists Through Its Third Week

The funding lapse was in its 25th day when the announcement was made, coming after appeals by more than two hundred Democratic representatives urging the USDA to access contingency funds to pay for the upcoming nutrition payments.

“The reality is, resources are exhausted,” officials announced. “Currently, assistance will not be provided” starting next month.

National Consequences

Tens of millions of people depend on the regular assistance, according to official statistics. Various areas, like one southwestern state, dependence on SNAP reaches one-fifth of the population.

Internal communications seen by a major news agency indicated that USDA officials chose not to tap reserve funds to cover next month's assistance.

Political Stalemate

Lawmakers from both parties continue to disagree about the way to support and resume the federal government.

Remarks from the leader of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities indicated that the administration had opportunities to prepare in advance to avoid interruption in payments.

“They had the ability and responsibility taken steps before now to be prepared to access these resources,” the remarks concluded. “Rather, it may choose not to use them in an effort to gain political advantage” as Republicans seek to pressure Senate Democrats to vote for a funding package that would reopen federal functions.

Emergency Measures

State leaders from multiple regions issued emergency declarations in recent days to make money available to combat potential hunger preparing for food benefits expiring during the upcoming period.
