Larry Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader Larry Summers is departing from the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a series of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal the accused trafficker became public.
He commented in a statement that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have contributed, excited about the potential of the enterprise, and anticipate following their progress".
The prominent academic, who previously headed the Ivy League institution, stated on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The recently released communications revealed that the official corresponded with Epstein until the eve of Epstein's 2019 arrest for alleged human trafficking of underage individuals.
In additional comments, the technology organization expressed it respected the economist's choice to step down.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the perspective he provided to the Board," the company stated.
Congressional Action
This news arrives after both chambers of the legislative branch decided on Tuesday to approve a bill that would compel the US justice department to release its records on Jeffrey Epstein.
The measure will then proceed to the administration of President Trump for signature. He has indicated he expects to sign the bill, after changing his view on the subject following pushback from his supporters.
Message Details
A batch of financier-linked messages disclosed by the Congressional committee last week referenced several high-profile figures in the financier's previous network, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.
The communications indicated that the economist and Epstein often met for meals, with he often seeking to connect Summers to prominent global figures.
Personal Response
After the correspondence were made available with the general audience, Summers said he accepted "full responsibility for my ill-advised decision to continue interacting with the financier".
He continued that he desired "to rebuild trust and fix bonds with the individuals nearest to me".
Career Background
Summers served in high-level positions under party leaders; functioning as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the National Economic Council under President Obama.
He presided over the university from five years and continues to be a faculty member there. When stating his step-down from public roles earlier on Monday, he indicated he would persist with his educational duties.
Other Impacts
Following the economist's statement on Monday, the policy organization, a liberal think tank in the capital where Summers was a researcher, announced that he was no longer affiliated with the organization.
Summers became part of the board of OpenAI, which develops the language model, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to oust its top executive Sam Altman.
