Information Available About the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the death toll remains at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were taken to the hospital.

The victims have not yet been publicly named, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
