El Kaabi's Stunning Strike Wraps Up Morocco's Victory Against Comoros in Afcon Opener.

The Morocco overcame a nervy start to defeat their island opponents in the competition's opening game on the weekend, thanks to the Real Madrid attacker and super-sub Ayoub El Kaabi in the second half.

This constituted a less than dominant showing, though, from the highly fancied hosts, who are ranked 97 places higher than the small Indian Ocean nation in the FIFA rankings and were forced to grind out for the victory in rainy conditions at Rabat's Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium.

Tense Beginning and Spurned Opportunities

The hosts missed an early spot-kick and were goalless at the interval even with dominating possession, finally opening the scoring in the 11th minute of the second half.

The goal came when full-back Mazraoui did well to keep the ball in play before laying it square for Brahim Díaz to sidefoot into the net.

Every opening game is always difficult but we came good in the second period,” commented Morocco coach Regragui.

The Substitute's Piece of Brilliance

The tension was then calmed by a moment of sheer genius from Ayoub El Kaabi. Just ten minutes after his introduction, the forward connected with a cross with a acrobatic bicycle kick in the 74th minute, making it two and ensuring the result.

Earlier in the match, the hosts might have taken ahead in the 11th minute after a spot-kick was awarded for a challenge on Brahim Díaz. Yet, Soufiane Rahimi penalty was saved by Comoros goalkeeper Pandor.

Comoros Defiant Stand and Late Opportunity

The underdogs stoutly defended against Morocco at bay before the Moroccans' individual talent in the end made the difference.

Shot-stopper Yannick Pandor made a number of other fine saves to keep down the score as the game wore on, even though his team did have a chance for an equaliser shortly after Díaz's goal, with Rafiki Saïd firing straight at Morocco goalkeeper Bounou.

Injury Worry for Morocco

The victory was somewhat marred by an apparent injury to the skipper, Saïss, who limped off in the 18th minute apparently in tears.

The defender had just returned to the national side last month after a lengthy layoff caused by ankle surgery.

The win continues Morocco's historic run of successive victories to 19, beating the previous record of 15 set by the Spanish national team between 2008 and 2009.
