Disputed US-backed Gaza Relief Group Concludes Relief Activities

The debated, United States and Israel-funded Gaza relief foundation declares it is winding down its humanitarian work in the Palestinian territory, after almost six months.

The group had already suspended its three food distribution sites in Gaza after the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel was implemented six weeks ago.

The foundation sought to bypass the UN as the primary provider of aid to Gaza's population.

International relief agencies would not collaborate with its approach, claiming it was questionable and hazardous.

Many residents were fatally wounded while attempting to obtain sustenance amid disorderly situations near the foundation's locations, mostly by Israeli fire, as reported by United Nations.

The Israeli military claimed its soldiers fired alerting fire.

Program Termination

The foundation announced on the beginning of the week that it was terminating work now because of the "satisfactory fulfillment of its humanitarian effort", with a aggregate of 3 million parcels containing the equivalent of more than 187 million meals distributed to Gazans.

The organization's top administrator, Jon Acree, also said the US-led Civil-Military Coordination Centre (CMCC) - which has been set up to help execute US President Donald Trump's Gaza peace plan - would be "adopting and expanding the system the foundation tested".

"GHF's model, in which militant groups were prevented from misappropriating relief supplies, played a huge role in bringing Palestinian factions to negotiations and securing a halt in hostilities."

Reactions and Responses

The militant group - which disputes allegations of misappropriation - supported the shutdown of the GHF, as indicated by media.

A representative of declared GHF should be subject to scrutiny for the negative impact it created to Palestinians.

"We urge all worldwide humanitarian bodies to guarantee that responsibility is assigned after causing the death and injury of numerous Palestinians and obscuring the nutritional restriction approach implemented by the Israel's administration."

Organization Timeline

The organization commenced activities in Gaza on late May, a seven days following Israeli authorities had somewhat relaxed a complete restriction on humanitarian and trade shipments to Gaza that continued for 77 days and resulted in critical deficits of necessary provisions.

Three months later, a famine was declared in the Palestinian urban center.

The organization's sustenance provision locations in southern and central Gaza were administered by American private security firms and situated within Israeli military zones.

Aid Organization Objections

United Nations agencies and their collaborators said the methodology contravened the fundamental humanitarian principles of objectivity, fairness and autonomy, and that directing needy individuals into armed forces regions was fundamentally dangerous.

United Nations human rights division stated it documented the fatalities of no fewer than 859 Gazans trying to acquire sustenance in the area surrounding organization centers between 26 May and 31 July.

A further 514 persons were killed near the routes of UN and other aid convoys, it also mentioned.

The greater part of these people were fatally wounded by the Israeli forces, according to the office.

Divergent Narratives

The Israeli military stated its soldiers had released alerting fire at persons who advanced toward them in a "threatening" manner.

The foundation stated there were no firearm incidents at the aid sites and claimed the international organization of using "inaccurate and deceptive" data from the Palestinian health authority administered by Hamas.

Ongoing Situation

The organization's continuation had been unclear since militant groups and the Israeli government approved a halt in hostilities arrangement to execute the first phase of the United States' reconciliation proposal.

It said humanitarian assistance would take place "absent meddling from the both sides through the United Nations and its agencies, and the international relief society, in conjunction with other worldwide bodies not linked whatsoever" with Hamas and Israel.

UN spokesperson the UN spokesman said on Monday that the organization's termination would have "zero effect" on its operations "as we never partnered with them".

The official further mentioned that while more aid was getting into Gaza since the halt in hostilities began on 10 October, it was "inadequate to meet all the needs" of the 2.1 million population.
