A Pig's Tale: Pig Named 6-7 Spared by Miami-Dade Leader.
Although not quite at the identical stature as sparing holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the commencement of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life away from worry.”
The gathering, either celebrating or rejecting the local cultural practice of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “six seven” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so widespread that a leading lexicon site recently declared “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: happy, diverse, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Each year, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
